# Tutorial: Two-Factor Authentication with Google Authenticator (OTP)
Two-Factor Authentication (MFA/2FA) adds a vital layer of protection to your HLI account by combining something you know (your login) and something you own (your smartphone).
---
## 1. What is Google Authenticator (OTP)?
**Google Authenticator** is a free mobile app that generates time-based, single-use validation codes (**TOTP - Time-Based One-Time Password**).
These 6-digit codes automatically regenerate every 30 seconds. The app operates locally on your phone and does not require an active internet connection or mobile network to function.
You can also use other compatible authenticator apps, such as Microsoft Authenticator, Aegis, Bitwarden, or 2FA Authenticator.
---
## 2. What is it for?
* **Protection against password theft**: Even if a malicious actor discovers or steals your password, they cannot log into your account because they do not have physical access to your smartphone to obtain the temporary code.
* **Compliance with security standards**: Accessing sensitive corporate management data requires strong authentication to protect against corporate espionage and financial fraud.
---
## 3. How to use it in HLI?
### Step 1: Downloading the App
On your smartphone, install an authenticator app from your app store:
* **Android (Google Play Store)**: Search for "Google Authenticator".
* **iOS (Apple App Store)**: Search for "Google Authenticator".
### Step 2: Initial Setup in HLI (Login required)
To link your HLI account to your mobile application:
1. Log in to HLI.
2. Go to your **User Profile** (top right, click on your name, then "My Profile").
3. Navigate to the **Security & Authentication** section and look for the **Two-Factor Authentication (OTP)** area.
4. Click on **Enable two-factor authentication**. A unique **QR Code** will be displayed on your screen.
5. Open the **Google Authenticator** app on your phone, tap the **"+"** button (Add), and select **Scan a QR code**.
6. Scan the QR code shown in HLI using your phone's camera. Your HLI account is immediately added to the app.
7. To confirm the link, type the current 6-digit code from your app into HLI, then click **Validate**.
### Step 3: Daily Login from the HLI Login Page
Once configured, log in using your OTP code:
1. On the HLI homepage, switch to the second tab **OTP**.
2. Enter your **Society Code** and **Username (Login)**.
3. Open the **Google Authenticator** app on your phone and find the 6-digit code for HLI.
4. Enter this code into the **OTP Code** field on the HLI login page.
5. Click the **Login** button.
> [!NOTE]
> The code changes every 30 seconds. If the timer circle next to the code on your phone is flashing red, wait for the next code to ensure you have enough time to type it.
